I’m not sure I’m an adult yet

In Uncategorized on September 11, 2011 at 1:04 pm

What happens when you put seven playwrights in a room for a week and ask them to think about what it means to be an adult?

Taking inspiration from the Johnny Depp quote as the title for the piece, and Kate Crawford’s book  ‘Adult Themes’ , that looks at where our definitions of adulthood can be found in a world that can no longer provide traditional safe havens like houses to own, lifetime jobs and nuclear family structures. The bold and curious writers delved back into that middle phase, adolescence to ask, when does a person become an adult now? What are the rites of passage? What can we look to as truly ‘adult traits’ to aspire to in an uncertain universe?

The result will be revealed in a development showing written and devised by Nikki Britton, Rebecca Clarke, Rachael Coopes, Joanna Erskine, Patrick Lenton, Katie Pollock and Tresa Ponnor. Mentored by Craig Ilott, with ISM & Queen St Studio & City of Sydney support.

SEASON DATES: 16, 17, 18, 24 & 25 November at 9pm

Heaven

I feel kind of okay – I actually feel like I should be more fucked up about it than I am, y’know?

When Angela Farnsworth is run over by a bakery van and killed after walking home from school one day, the world starts to look very different to Max. Death seems just around the corner, and whatever it is that comes after becomes a terrifying mystery. So, despite the scepticism of his friends, Max decides to ask the only person he knows who might be able to shed some light on the whole mystery of the universe.

Summoning the dead can have unforeseen consequences.

Heaven is a bittersweet comedy from playwright Kit Brookman about death, growing up, and the perils of becoming an amateur medium.

with Akos Armont, Julia Billington, Thomas Conroy, and Geraldine Hakewill.
